How to Open a Consignment Shop

Thinking about opening a children’s consignment shop?

A children’s resale or consignment shop can be a rewarding experience both personally and financially. Customers are so appreciative.  But…  are you cut out for it? Do you have the capital necessary?

Think you need help?

Without help, the odds are against your making it beyond the first year.  Why, “because you don’t know what you don’t know.”

Thinking “How-To” Manuals?

The best and most comprehensive manuals come from Too Good to be Threw and NARTS. However, while generally useful and rich in ideas they’re written mostly for consignment shops and for the resale industry in general, short on critical detail and specifics regarding Children’s Resale.

Thinking you need to become a Kid to KidOnce Upon a Child, …  franchisee: to get the help you need?

Certainly. as a franchisee, you’ll get support, know-how and the tools needed to be up and running in good fashion and time.  But there’s a high price to pay.  Royalties and fees range from $25-40,000 to start, and at least 5% of gross sales annually for the life of the business.  The store is legally theirs, not yours; you will be their franchisee for the life of your business.  You must agree to abide religiously with franchise dictates and to pay penalties if you don’t. You effectively sign away the right to challenge the Franchisor on any count, and forgo the right to engage in the resale children’s business other than as a Franchisee.

Is there an alternative?

Yes.  NextGen Children’s Resale, established in 2011.  NextGen is a Children’s Resale Service Bureau, established to support children’s resale store owners specifically. We provide training, support, a point of sale system, a custom website, other web platforms, services and tools that rival and surpass those offered by the franchises. Founded by former children’s resale franchisees, our goal is to provide an owner-friendly, affordable alternative to franchising and, a safer alternative to going it alone.
